Owner: Thomas Mason
Name: Scout
Age: 5
Breed: Paint/ Quarter horse
Gender: Mare
Appearance: An overo paint with a grulla outprint; the build of a Quarter horse – short, a formed neck, though not as stocky as some. ( See Picture for more info. )
Personality: Scout is .. very unique. She’s calmed down a lot since meeting Tom – but she still has her devilish antics. She’ll try to catch your hair and tug, or your sleeve. But never the skin – though it does frighten children most often.
At first, she’s a bit high strung with strangers. She does everything she can to annoy them – basically, she hasn’t grown up and calmed down yet.
But with Tom, she is a bit calmer. He taught her to obey voice commands, signals, etc. Most days, she doesn’t need a halter to wander around with him – just as long as she stays focused on what the goal is.
Riding, however, is a bit more difficult. She still fights to rebel against the rider’s commands, but usually follows unless something seems outrageous. But she can still be good – she reminds the rider when s/he is doing something wrong. If they have too much of her head, for example, she will pull her hind quarters up as if she’ll buck. Or she’ll swish her tail to show annoyance at the unbalanced weight.
Now, as a herd animal, she is aggressive. She fights for the dominance that most crave – and she will do most things to achieve it.
History: Scout was born on a windy day of March, 2002 to a farm down in the blistering state of Florida. It was an okay life down there – nothing special, nothing dramatic happened there. But as she grew older, she began more .. feisty. The owners had no clue how to raise the poor thing, so she was basically left alone and only fed. She had only had the halter on her twice, and had freaked out each time – so they left her alone.
The next year when she was barely three, however, things really changed. The owners decided to sell her – why have such a hassle? And so she moved to a far out west where they took things dead serious.
She was forced into a halter, and soon after a bridle and saddle. Of course, she rebelled. She constantly fought with the rider, grabbed the bit, bucked reared, even tried to slam people into the fences. Not only was she a devil when riding, oh no, she was the same on ground. Most days she wouldn’t let anyone catch her in the field. She attempted to tear down the stall walls multiple times – and she bite, kicked, tore, anything possible.
Frustrated, the cowboys eventually drugged her into a calm state, and convinced some riders in Georgia to take her – she was a good looking horse when she never acted up. They got a nice surprise the day she woke up from her trance. It was hell for all of them – the constant struggle.
Until, of course, the day Tom came to the barn and watched. He never touched her, he never asked her to do anything, she simply talked to her. They slowly built a trust that was unstable, fragile around each other. But soon, Scout was following him around like a puppy. She had no other friends, she was aggressive to any animals in sight – except for the boy.
Each day proved a new challenge. Some day he’d show her the halter, others – the saddle. Even though it was a frustratingly slow process, she eventually allowed him to ride her. But they never did anything but walk around. He didn’t ask for anything else for months.
Of course, she does have moments even with Tom when she reverts back to her own ways – but he never fights. He allows a limit to what he gives, and she accepts this as a truce.
After being moved to Cedarbridge, Scout has finally begun to relax with Tom, even though she is a bit wry on some days.
Discipline: Jumpers/ Cross Country
Habits/Spooks: Dogs, cats, water, funky looking trees, a sudden appearance, things tying her head down and panicky people.
